Sabrina Gigliotti death triggers investigation in Ostia

A 39-year-old woman from Ostia, Sabrina Gigliotti, died on October 25 at San Camillo Hospital in Rome following a suspected violin spider bite. Her family has filed a complaint, leading the Rome Prosecutor's Office to open an investigation into manslaughter against unknown persons.

The investigation aims to clarify the medical care provided at several facilities, including Grassi Hospital in Ostia and the Celio Military Policlinico. According to the family's complaint, Gigliotti sought treatment in mid-September for a painful, itchy bite on her thigh. She was initially prescribed antibiotics, but her condition progressively worsened over 40 days, involving severe back, joint, and abdominal pain.

By late October, her health declined rapidly, resulting in a blood infection and the need for intubation. She was transferred to Spallanzani Hospital before her death at San Camillo. While the family suspects medical negligence and delayed diagnoses, authorities have not yet confirmed if the violin spider bite was the definitive cause of death. An autopsy has been ordered to establish the facts.
