Israel's Katz and 12 officials under investigation by Italian prosecutors

Italian prosecutors in Rome have expanded a criminal investigation into the treatment of activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla missions. The probe, which was previously focused on National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, now includes Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and 12 other high-ranking officials from the Israeli military, police, and prison services.

The investigation follows complaints from 50 Italian citizens who were detained during two flotilla missions aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip in late 2025 and early 2026. Authorities are examining allegations of torture, kidnapping, physical assault, robbery, and property damage.

Activists reported varying levels of abuse. Those detained during the first mission in 2025 alleged beatings, death threats, and verbal insults. Participants in the second 2026 mission reported more severe treatment, including beatings in the dark and the use of tasers and rubber bullets. Some activists also reported at least 15 cases of sexual assault, including rape.

Prosecutors are investigating whether the interception of the vessels in international waters violated international maritime law and are working to determine individual criminal responsibility within the Israeli chains of command.
