Rome Secures Government Funding for 2029 World Athletics Championships Bid

The Italian government has granted a guarantee of financing for Rome’s bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships. Ministers for Sport Andrea Abodi and Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti confirmed the funding on 4 August 2026, completing the support from the national government, the Lazio regional administration and Rome’s municipal authorities. Regional President Francesco Rocca and Mayor Roberto Gualtieri praised the decision, saying it will create a lasting legacy for the city and the region. Fidal President Stefano Mei highlighted the expected economic impact of up to €1.5 billion and the opportunity to showcase Italy’s sport infrastructure. With the financial guarantee in place, Rome will present a strengthened dossier to World Athletics, competing with other candidate cities for the 2029 event.
