Rome to honor Thomas Sankara with park inauguration
The Ministry of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism of Burkina Faso and the Burkinabè embassy in Italy will host a series of commemorative events in Rome from October 23 to 25, 2026. The program honors the late President Thomas Sankara, the leader of the August 1983 Revolution.
A central feature of the event is the official inauguration of ‘Parco Thomas Sankara,’ a park located on via Ugo della Seta in the city’s third arrondissement. The ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, October 24, will include the unveiling of a statue of Sankara, an art exhibition opening, and the international launch of the ‘Ma brique pour Sankara’ campaign.
Additional activities will include conferences, film screenings, and cultural performances. The event also marks the installation of the Italian focal point for the International Committee of the Thomas Sankara Memorial (CIM-TS). Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, previously expressed gratitude to the Italian government and the municipality of Rome for these initiatives to preserve Sankara’s legacy.
