Rome to test electronic gates for Appia Antica traffic zone

Rome is set to begin testing electronic gates on September 19 to manage access to the new Appia Antica Territorial Limited Traffic Zone (ZTLT). This initiative aims to protect the archaeological park, which was recently recognized by UNESCO, by replacing generic Sunday driving bans enforced by local police patrols with a technological solution.

The new automated system is designed to prevent through-traffic while ensuring accessibility for residents, businesses, and visitors. Under the new rules, vehicles entering the area for specific purposes must exit through the same gate they used to enter, effectively eliminating the use of the historic artery as an urban shortcut.
