Rome to transform Via dei Fori Imperiali into pedestrian zone

Rome is undergoing a major urban transformation of Via dei Fori Imperiali, the historic axis connecting Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum. The project aims to shift the focus from vehicular traffic to the surrounding archaeological heritage by creating expansive pedestrian and cycling spaces.

Under the plan, the current six lanes used by buses and taxis will be reduced to just two. The remaining roadway will be converted into a continuous, level surface for pedestrians and cyclists, achieved by removing existing sidewalks and curbs to eliminate physical barriers. The two dedicated transit lanes will be marked by metal studs in the pavement rather than physical dividers. The redesign also includes new tree lines and panoramic terraces overlooking archaeological excavations.

This redevelopment is a central component of the ‘Carme’ project (Centro archeologico monumentale di Roma), a broader program involving over 80 interventions across 106 hectares, spanning from Piazza Venezia to the Circus Maximus. The works are funded by the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) and funds allocated for the Jubilee.
