Rome tourist fined 450 euros for climbing into Naiad Fountain

A 42-year-old German tourist was fined 450 euros and ordered to leave the area after climbing into the Naiad Fountain at Piazza della Repubblica in Rome on Monday morning. Local residents witnessed the incident and alerted the Carabinieri.

Swimming in Rome’s historic fountains is strictly prohibited to protect the centuries-old, ornate structures from damage and pollution. Due to rising temperatures and increasing visitor numbers, Roman authorities have implemented stricter controls and protection measures for historical sites. For example, since 2026, visitors have been required to pay a two-euro fee just to view the Trevi Fountain.
