Verona prosecutors investigate three Carabinieri commanders

The Verona Prosecutor's Office has opened a new investigation into three Carabinieri officers for multiple manslaughter in connection with the Castel d’Azzano tragedy. The investigation focuses on whether negligence occurred during the planning and management of a police raid on October 14, 2025.

The three officers under investigation are Colonel Claudio Papagno, provincial commander of Verona; Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Sframeli, former commander of the operational unit; and Captain Vincenzo Spataro, commander of the Villafranca company. Investigators are examining if the officers failed to halt the operation despite signs of imminent danger, including reports that the smell of gas was detected minutes before the explosion.

The original incident involved a raid on a farmhouse occupied by the Ramponi siblings, Franco, Dino, and Maria Luisa. The siblings allegedly saturated the building with gas and prepared Molotov cocktails to oppose an eviction. The resulting explosion killed three Carabinieri—Marco Piffari, Valerio Daprà, and Davide Bernardello—and injured 25 others. While the Ramponi siblings face charges of massacre, this new inquiry seeks to determine if the deaths of the officers were preventable due to tactical errors.
