Rome unveils new public area at the San Paolo Rock Sepulchral Complex

The Rome City Council announced that a previously inaccessible sector of the Sepolcreto della via Ostiense at the San Paolo Rock is now open to visitors. The works, carried out by the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali under the PNRR‑Caput Mundi programme, included structural consolidation, removal of invasive vegetation, restoration of ancient plasterwork, installation of modern lighting, security cameras and educational panels.

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri highlighted the project's goal of preserving and showcasing a burial complex that spans from the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD, featuring nine tombs and frescoes reproduced from originals kept at the Museo di Porta San Paolo. The new pathway and interpretive displays aim to broaden public engagement with Rome’s archaeological heritage beyond the traditional tourist routes.
