Rome unveils tactile mural for World Sight Day
In the Testaccio district of Rome, a new mural titled ‘La vista è una perla preziosa, proteggila con la prevenzione’ has been unveiled. Created by artist Jerico Cabrera Carandang, the artwork is designed to be tactile, using textures, volumes, and raised surfaces so that it can be ‘read’ by touch by individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
The project was launched to coincide with World Sight Day 2026 and is promoted by the IAPB Italia ETS foundation, the Italian section of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. Mario Barbuto, president of IAPB Italia, stated that the initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis, using urban art as a tool for social and health engagement.
The mural is located on the walls of the Istituto Superiore De Amicis Cattaneo and follows a progressive narrative, beginning with a pearl—symbolizing something precious and delicate—which evolves into the shape of an eye. The project is supported by the Municipality of Rome, with local officials noting that such street art contributes to the cultural regeneration of public spaces and promotes social inclusion.
