Rome wildfires spread through Aniene Valley and Conca d’Oro

Large-scale wildfires broke out in the Aniene Valley area of Rome, specifically affecting the Conca d’Oro district and the Parco delle Valli. The fires, fueled by high temperatures, dry vegetation, and wind, spread across multiple fronts, including areas near Ponte Nomentano, via Monte Nevoso, and viale Gottardo.

During the emergency, residents reported thick smoke and an acrid smell, forcing many to remain indoors. An explosion was also reported during the afternoon. Emergency services, including the Firefighters and Civil Protection, worked to contain the flames, which traveled over a kilometer through green spaces.

Following the initial blaze, new small hotspots and smoke plumes were detected the next day within the park. The fires impacted an informal settlement, leaving behind charred remains of tents and debris. The recurring nature of these fires, alongside issues of waste and illegal settlements, has led to local calls for structural interventions and investigations into whether the fires were intentionally set.
