Rome’s East District Violence Prompts Calls for Stronger State Security

On 18 July, 22‑year‑old Mohammed Amdi was killed after trying to defend a friend during a robbery at Rome’s Togliatti train station. He suffered a fatal head wound from a screwdriver and died after eight days of intensive care. The homicide joins other recent violent incidents in the city’s east quadrant, including a robbery‑related stabbing at Tor Sapienza and a person found in critical condition on Via dei Gordiani.

In response, Italia Viva city councilors Valerio Casini and Francesca Leoncini issued a statement urging the national government to provide extraordinary support for public safety in the area. They called for an increased state presence, stronger police resources, and concrete measures to dismantle criminal networks, drug‑dealing spots and other sources of violence in Rome’s eastern neighborhoods.
