Romeu Zema discusses political future and mining decree scrutiny

Romeu Zema, the Novo party presidential candidate and former governor of Minas Gerais, has stated he intends to withdraw from politics for a significant period if he is not elected in 2026. Zema noted the need to focus on personal commitments and family life, though he maintains he remains a competitive candidate for the presidency.

Separately, a decree issued by Zema during his tenure as governor of Minas Gerais has come under scrutiny. The decree, published in February, authorized the use of two farms in Mariana for mining activities by Cedro Mineração Mariana S.A. The company is part of the Cedro group, founded by Lucas Prado Kallas, who has reported connections to former banker Daniel Vorcaro and various figures associated with the Supreme Federal Court (STF).

The decree is currently facing legal challenges, as documents suggest the disputed area may overlap with existing mineral research permits held by another company and could affect 14 other mining titles under federal jurisdiction.
