Romolo Romani: Rediscovering a forgotten pioneer of Italian abstract art

Romolo Romani (1884–1916), an Italian painter, is being recognized as a forgotten pioneer of abstract art. Despite developing rigorous geometric abstraction through works such as ‘Prismi’, ‘Gocce’, and ‘Immagine’ between 1905 and 1910, his contributions have largely been omitted from mainstream art history.

Romani’s work preceded the widely celebrated non-figurative breakthroughs of Wassily Kandinsky. While Kandinsky became a central figure in modern art theory, Romani’s legacy remained obscure, often dismissed as the work of an eccentric.

The year 2026 marks the 110th anniversary of Romani’s death. His passing in August 1916 coincided with the death of fellow avant-garde artist Umberto Boccioni, who died just seven days after Romani. While Boccioni received significant historical commemoration, Romani has remained largely in obscurity.
