Ron Brown Way shared path opens at Pelican

The first stage of the $2.6 million Ron Brown Way shared path extension has officially opened at Pelican, providing a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists near Lake Macquarie Airport. The 480-metre extension stretches from Naru Street to the airport, allowing users to bypass the increasing traffic volumes on the Pacific Highway.

The project is being completed in two stages. While the first stage is complete, the second stage is currently in the design phase and will add 300 metres of pathway from the airport to Soldiers Road. The extension is part of Lake Macquarie’s broader 136km shared path network.

The pathway is named in honor of Ron Brown, a lifelong local advocate for community infrastructure who campaigned for years to improve safety for children and residents traveling toward Marks Point and Belmont. The project was jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Active Transport Fund, the New South Wales Government via the Get NSW Active Program, and the Lake Macquarie City Council.
