Ron DeSantis says SAVE Act unlikely to pass Senate before August recess

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis told followers on X that the chance the Senate will approve the Save America (SAVE) Act before its August recess is "basically zero." The legislation, championed by President Donald Trump, would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and a photo ID to cast a ballot.

Trump has urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to keep the Senate in session and to eliminate the filibuster so Republicans could advance the bill. Senate leaders, however, acknowledge they lack the 60‑vote threshold needed to overcome Democratic opposition. Senate Rules Committee Chairman Mitch McConnell warned that a federal voter‑ID mandate could give future Democratic presidents broad election‑control tools. DeSantis' assessment reflects the broader Republican frustration with the Senate's ability to move the proposal forward.
