Ronald L. Fischer captured after 20-year fugitive run

Ronald L. Fischer, a former anesthesiologist who fled Rhode Island in 2005 during his trial for first‑degree sexual assault, was arrested on July 16, 2026. Authorities located him aboard a 56‑foot sailing vessel named "The Silver Lining" off the New Jersey–New York coast. The boat was registered under the alias Richard Graydon, a false name Fischer used while on the run.

The capture involved the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force, the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, Rhode Island State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard. Deputies intercepted the sailboat about an hour offshore, took Fischer into custody without incident, and transferred him to a Coast Guard station on Staten Island for handoff to local law‑enforcement. He will be extradited to Rhode Island to face the sexual‑assault conviction and related charges.

A search of Fischer’s residence uncovered books on evading law enforcement and evidence that he used an “onion router” for online anonymity.
