Ronald Rauhe appointed German State Minister for Sport

Two-time Olympic canoeist Ronald Rauhe has been appointed as the new State Minister for Sport and Volunteerism in the German Chancellery. Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the appointment, which completes the restructuring of the federal government following the resignation of Jens Spahn.

Rauhe succeeds Christiane Schenderlein, who is transitioning to the Federal Ministry of Health. The appointment of Rauhe, a 44-year-old former elite athlete and member of the European Olympic Committees' Athletes' Commission, has been welcomed by major sports organizations, including the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the German Sports Aid Foundation.

Key priorities for Rauhe's new role include advancing Germany's bid to host future Olympic and Paralympic Games and implementing reforms in high-performance sports. Merz emphasized the importance of having a former athlete in the position to better represent the interests of both competitive and grassroots sports.
