Ronaldo Balanta recounts overcoming homelessness to play professional football

Colombian goalkeeper Ronaldo Balanta has shared the extreme hardships he faced before establishing his professional football career. At age 19, Balanta was deceived by a supposed sports agent who promised football opportunities in Peru. After being taken to the country, the intermediary disappeared with the funds, leaving Balanta and several other young players stranded.

Following an eviction from their hotel, Balanta spent three nights sleeping under a bridge, during which time he was robbed of his clothing, football boots, and goalkeeper gloves. The lack of food and resources severely impacted his physical health while he was isolated far from home.

After returning to Colombia via a humanitarian repatriation flight, Balanta began training again in the country's third division. His career progressed when the Honduran club Atlético Júnior offered him a professional contract. He has since achieved financial stability, allowing him to support his family. Balanta currently plays for Génesis FC in the top tier of Honduran football.
