Ronaldo Dimas Gains Momentum as Senator Irajá Abreu Withdraws from Tocantins Senate Race

Senator Irajá Abreu of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) announced he will not run for re‑election to the Brazilian Senate after his name was omitted from the party convention record at his own request. PSD confirmed the withdrawal, stating the omission was made out of respect for the senator’s formal request and that no replacement was selected by the party.

The exit reshapes the Tocantins Senate contest, strengthening former Araguaína mayor Ronaldo Dimas, who is now viewed as one of the leading candidates for the two Senate seats up for election in October. Mayor Wagner Rodrigues of Araguaína, previously aligned with Irajá, is expected to consider supporting Dimas, potentially consolidating backing from the state’s two largest cities, Araguaína and Palmas. State PSD leader Laurez Moreira reiterated that the decision was the senator’s own and that the party respected the legal and procedural timeline.
