Antônio Rueda's candidacy approved by TRE-RJ despite militia allegations
The Rio de Janeiro Regional Electoral Court (TRE-RJ) has unanimously approved the candidacy of Antônio Rueda, president of the União Brasil party, for federal deputy. The decision follows a period of investigation into allegations that Rueda's campaign benefited from political-territorial structures linked to paramilitary militias in the Baixada Fluminense region, specifically in Belford Roxo.
The Electoral Public Ministry (MPE) had shifted its position to support the rejection of Rueda's registration, citing evidence that individuals with known militia ties, such as Eduardo Araújo and Fabinho Varandão, actively promoted his campaign on social media. The MPE argued that Rueda's alliance with local political figures, including Márcio Canella, allowed for the potential use of paramilitary mobilization and coercion to influence voters.
However, the TRE-RJ ruled that court-ordered inquiries failed to find evidence that Rueda personally requested, financed, or coordinated with these groups. The court determined that the social media posts by the mentioned individuals were unilateral actions of third parties and did not constitute proof of direct involvement or illegal conduct by the candidate. Rueda has denied all allegations, stating there is no legal proceeding linking him to criminal organizations.
