Ronceray Abbey reopens as cultural center in Angers

The Ronceray Abbey in the Doutre district of Angers has reopened as a cultural center after 235 years of silence. Formerly a significant medieval female monastic community, the site has been transformed into a living space for contemporary creation and cultural dialogue.

The restoration project, which began in 2022, aims to reintegrate the abbey into the city's cultural life. The abbey church features one of the largest Romanesque vaults of its era and serves as a natural auditorium due to its acoustics. A major highlight of the reopening is the discovery of a 13th-century pictorial cycle commissioned by Queen Blanche of Castile, featuring early oil technique frescoes with allegorical figures and heraldic motifs.

Scheduled activities include the Pianopolis festival and temporary exhibitions, such as one by artist Claude Viallat. The renovation included consolidating masonry and restoring a 300m2 area connecting the west and south portals to adapt the historic structure for modern public use.
