Rondonópolis City Council debates IPTU tax reform proposal
The Rondonópolis City Council is debating Complementary Law Project No. 049/2026, which proposes changes to the calculation parameters of the Urban Property and Territorial Tax (IPTU). The project aims to include new fiscal sectors and organize tax zone classifications to ensure new residential developments can be taxed.
Councilman Ibrahim Zaher has raised concerns regarding the potential financial impact on taxpayers, arguing that changes to square meter values and fiscal classifications could effectively increase taxes even without changes to tax rates. He has called for the removal of the urgency status to allow for a more in-depth technical analysis.
Other council members and the Municipal Secretary of Finance, Rane Curto, have contested the claim of a general tax hike. They clarified that the project does not increase tax rates or the General Value Plant, but rather updates fiscal sectors and construction value maps. The proposed changes are intended to take effect for the 2027 tax year.
