Roofing technology integrates insulation and photovoltaics
Developments in roofing technology are increasingly focusing on the integration of insulation, photovoltaic (PV) systems, and moisture management. High-performance insulation materials, such as BauderPIR polyurethane hard foam, are being utilized to facilitate modern roof designs, including green roofs and solar installations. These materials allow for high thermal insulation values even with thinner layers, which is particularly beneficial for renovations where structural height and weight are constrained.
However, the addition of PV modules introduces new complexities to roof moisture balance. Research from the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics indicates that solar modules alter the temperature profile of roof surfaces compared to exposed roofs. This change can affect how effectively moisture dries out from the construction. Experts note that relying solely on the sd-value (water vapor diffusion resistance) of a vapor barrier is insufficient for long-term protection, as factors like shading, construction moisture, and air tightness also play critical roles in the moisture balance.
