Roofings Group inaugurates US$125m steel plant in Uganda
President Yoweri Museveni has officially commissioned Roofings Group’s US$125 million Phase IV cold rolling mill complex at the Kampala Industrial and Business Park in Namanve, Uganda. The new facility features Level Two automation and is designed to produce higher-value steel products locally, including galvanised and colour-coated steel.
The expansion adds 150,000 metric tonnes of annual cold-rolled steel production capacity, bringing the company’s total cold-rolled capacity to 300,000 metric tonnes per annum. This investment is part of Roofings Group’s broader expansion in the country, with cumulative investments now exceeding US$500 million and a total installed production capacity of 625,000 metric tonnes per annum.
During the ceremony, President Museveni noted that the facility allows the company to move away from importing intermediate products from countries like Japan. He highlighted Uganda’s potential for steel development due to its high-grade iron ore, which he described as having a purity level of approximately 65 percent. The project is expected to bolster local value addition and support industrialization through increased domestic manufacturing.
