Roosevelt Roads begins demolition for marine innovation center

Demolition has begun on existing structures at the former Coast Guard pier in Roosevelt Roads, Ceiba, Puerto Rico. This work is a preliminary step toward developing the Marine Business Innovation and Research Center (MBRIC).

The project aims to transform the former naval base into a hub for innovation, research, and development focused on the Caribbean’s blue economy. Governor Jenniffer González Colón stated that the initiative seeks to attract new investments and strengthen Puerto Rico’s participation in ocean-related industries, noting that the blue economy currently supports over 63,000 jobs on the island.

The demolition and disposal phase is expected to last between 15 and 30 days, supported by an investment of over $100,000 from the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC). Prior to the demolition, work began on the removal and mitigation of materials containing lead-based paint.
