Swiss Re profit up 9% as AI strategy expands; Zurich posts 14% profit rise and $1bn data‑centre reinsurance

Swiss Re reported first‑half 2026 net income of $2.8 billion, a 9 % increase year‑on‑year, and highlighted artificial intelligence as a core pillar of its group strategy, enabling faster policy issuance and deeper risk insights. The insurer also raised its operating‑cost‑reduction target to $500 million by 2028 and noted progress on a $1.5 billion share‑buyback programme.

Zurich Insurance announced a first‑half net profit of $3.5 billion, up 14 % from the prior year, with operating profit climbing to $4.8 billion. Gross written premiums rose across property‑casualty and life lines, and the company lifted its full‑year operating‑profit outlook for the life business. Zurich also secured a $1 billion quota‑share reinsurance arrangement to underwrite data‑centre construction risks and disclosed a new US peak‑peril catastrophe reinsurance tower backed by a $150 million catastrophe bond.

Munich Re said July‑renewal reinsurance prices fell 5.5 % and its new business volume declined 9.1 %, projecting full‑year reinsurance revenue of €38 billion, two billion less than previously expected, while maintaining a €6.3 billion profit outlook.

The Euro‑Stoxx 50 index hit a record 6,502.56 points, up 0.39 %, driven by strong media‑stock earnings revisions and a positive signal from the telecom sector.
