Root launches telematics car insurance in New Jersey, its 37th state
Technology-driven insurer Root has introduced its behavior‑based car insurance in New Jersey, marking the company's 37th state offering. The policy relies on mobile telematics that price rates according to actual driving performance, with safe drivers potentially saving up to $1,300 a year. All onboarding, coverage selection, policy management and claims are handled through Root’s mobile app.
CEO Alex Timm said the launch is a “massive milestone” toward the goal of covering the contiguous United States by 2027. Root plans further expansion to Wyoming, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Michigan, Idaho and Maine pending regulatory approval and aims to grow its independent‑agent distribution channel to 100,000 eligible producers. The insurer also sells through partners such as Carvana, Toyota and Hyundai Capital, a channel that grew nearly 30% year‑over‑year.
Root reported record financial results for the first quarter of 2026, with net income of $35.9 million and a combined ratio of 91.4, while policies in force rose 9% to 495,429. The company ended 2025 with a record net income of $40.3 million, a 30% increase from the prior year. Founded in 2015 and based in Columbus, Ohio, Root continues to invest in its technology platform.
