Roque de los Muchachos Observatory inaugurates four Cherenkov telescopes
The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma has inaugurated four Large-Sized Telescopes (LST) as part of the future Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). These instruments, standing approximately 45 meters tall with 23-meter diameter mirrors, are designed to detect very high-energy gamma rays.
Unlike conventional telescopes that observe visible starlight, Cherenkov telescopes capture the brief flashes of light produced when gamma rays interact with the Earth's atmosphere. This capability allows scientists to study extreme cosmic phenomena, such as black hole activity and stellar explosions, which are often invisible to standard optical instruments.
This development strengthens La Palma's position as an international hub for astronomical research, providing new methods to investigate the most violent and energetic processes in the universe.
