Rory McIlroy defends participation in India championship after criticism
Rory McIlroy has dismissed criticism from former US Ryder Cup vice-captain Kevin Kisner regarding his participation in the DP World India Championship. Kisner characterized McIlroy’s stated goal of spreading golf to new markets as a “dogs*** comment,” suggesting the golfer’s presence in Delhi was motivated by a significant appearance fee, estimated at $10 million.
McIlroy responded by stating that both motivations can coexist: players can receive payment while simultaneously working to grow the sport in large, developing markets like India. McIlroy noted the importance of engaging with India’s massive middle class to expand the game globally.
McIlroy finished the tournament tied for 42nd place. He is scheduled to take a two-week break before competing in the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship in November.
