Rory McIlroy readies for Open Championship amid candid remarks and a busted scouting trip
Rory McIlroy travelled to Royal Birkdale for a confidential scouting visit ahead of this week’s Open Championship, but the effort was exposed when fellow golfer Sir Nick Faldo photographed the two together and shared the image on social media. McIlroy said he preferred the visit to remain private, noting Faldo’s comment that “he would have been spotted eventually” despite his attempts at secrecy.
McIlroy, who has limited his schedule to 12 events in 2026 to spend more time with his family, emphasized that a lighter playing load helps keep his enthusiasm high. He also stated he does not worry about his legacy, remarking, “I’ll be dead… I don’t really care,” and stressing that he focuses on enjoyment, practice and performing under pressure rather than on records or accolades. He enters the Open as one of the leading contenders.
These comments come as McIlroy prepares to tee off alongside Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele at the championship in northwest England.
