Corinthians and Rosario Central trade racism accusations after Libertadores draw

A controversy has erupted following the Copa Libertadores round-of-16 first leg between Rosario Central and Corinthians, which ended in a 0-0 draw. Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza reported being subjected to racist insults, including being called “monkey” and other derogatory terms, by local fans at the Gigante de Arroyito stadium. The referee, Andrés Matonte, activated CONMEBOL’s anti-racism protocol during the match after the complaint was made.

Corinthians has formally requested an investigation and sanctions, expressing absolute rejection of the discriminatory behavior. Conversely, Rosario Central issued a statement contesting Souza’s claims and accusing Corinthians fans of their own discriminatory and provocative acts. The Argentine club alleged that visiting supporters displayed Argentine currency and a Spanish national team jersey—referencing Spain’s victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final—as insults to the host country.

Rosario Central stated they possess evidence of these provocations and intend to present it to CONMEBOL. The football governing body is currently analyzing the situation and may initiate disciplinary proceedings. The two teams are scheduled to face each other again in the second leg at the Neo Química Arena to decide who advances to the quarterfinals.
