Paraguay launches soybean campaign and appoints new U.S. Ambassador
Paraguayan President Santiago Peña has launched the 2026/27 soybean campaign, emphasizing a strategic shift toward direct international trade to capture higher prices for local producers. During the official opening of the campaign in Caaguazú, organized by the Association of Soybean, Oilseed and Cereal Producers of Paraguay (APS), Peña highlighted the need to reduce reliance on large commercial intermediaries and expand market access, particularly in Asia. He also advocated for infrastructure improvements, such as the Bioceanic Corridor, to facilitate these exports.
In a separate diplomatic development, Estefanía Laterza de los Ríos has been officially designated as Paraguay’s Ambassador to the United States. Following her unanimous approval by the Senate, her upcoming agenda in Washington will focus on attracting investment, strengthening trade, and diversifying markets. She aims to position Paraguay as a regional actor within the bilateral alliance.
Amidst these economic and diplomatic moves, Peña addressed political critics during his agricultural tour, challenging opponents to compete in elections rather than criticizing from the sidelines. He also expressed interest in expanding the organic farming sector as a new economic pillar for the country.
