Rosario: Underground tunnels from former Mercado Norte discovered
During remodeling works at Plaza de la Cooperación in Rosario, workers discovered a series of underground masonry chambers and tunnels. Preliminary assessments suggest these structures belonged to the former Mercado Norte, a major supply market that operated for over a century before being demolished in 1980.
The discovered tunnels may have functioned as warehouses, cold storage, or unloading zones for the old market. The discovery has required the municipality to intervene in local vegetation, as tree roots had grown into the empty spaces beneath the plaza's surface. Authorities are currently evaluating preservation alternatives while managing humidity and structural deterioration to ensure the plaza can be returned to public use within the planned construction schedule.
