Rosary traditions in Poland: historical research and local observances

Historical research and local religious observances highlight the traditions surrounding the Month of the Rosary in Poland. Dr. Dominika Grabiec from the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences has conducted studies into Dominican Rosary processions in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Her research, utilizing archives from the Dominican province in Kraków, uncovered a ‘processional book’ used by the Rosary Archconfraternity at St. Jack's Monastery in Warsaw. These historical processions were communal events, often moving between Dominican churches with five altars set up along the route, similar to Corpus Christi celebrations.

In contemporary practice, the Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Skotniki, Kraków, continues these traditions through local festivities. The parish observes its patronal feast with a plenary indulgence mass and a procession around the church, involving various community groups and youth. The week also includes daily Rosary services and preparations for religious milestones such as confirmation.
