Rosatom accelerates Vietnam's Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power project

Russia's Rosatom is accelerating the development and operation of the Ninh Thuan 1 Nuclear Power Plant, the first nuclear project in Vietnam's history. At the Eastern Economic Forum, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev stated that legal agreements regarding the project's structure and progress are being finalized urgently. The project will utilize the VVER-1200 Gen III+ reactor, a water-cooled technology with a capacity of 1,200 Megawatts. This specific reactor technology is currently used in only seven countries: Russia, Belarus, Turkey, Bangladesh, Hungary, Egypt, and China.

In conjunction with the technical development, local authorities in Khanh Hoa are focusing on resettlement and land clearance projects for both the Ninh Thuan 1 and Ninh Thuan 2 plants. For Ninh Thuan 1, approximately 783 cases involving 515 hectares are affected, with an estimated compensation and support budget of 1,827 billion VND. For Ninh Thuan 2, the project involves 841 cases across 413.6 hectares, with an estimated budget of 2,651.7 billion VND. Construction on resettlement areas is underway, with officials aiming to complete these phases within 2026.
