Rosatom accused of safety violations at Egyptian nuclear plant project

Rosatom, the Russian state-owned nuclear energy company, is facing serious allegations of safety and engineering violations at the El Dabaa nuclear power plant project in Egypt. According to confidential documents and a letter from the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plants Authority, the company is accused of “intentional negligence” and failing to uphold nuclear safety culture.

The allegations include significant technical defects, such as holes behind metal cladding, faulty foundation plates, and structural issues in reactor buildings. Furthermore, the Egyptian authority has accused Rosatom of using “deceptive methods” and “fictitious activities” to misrepresent construction progress, claiming the site appears more advanced than it actually is.

These developments raise concerns for the European Union, as Rosatom is currently constructing the Paks II nuclear plant in Hungary using the same reactor technology. While Rosatom has maintained that it adheres to the highest safety standards, internal audits suggest potential delays of up to 18 months for the first reactor in Egypt. The controversy comes at a time when Rosatom is attempting to prove its reliability to European governments following international sanctions.
