Rosatom to build floating nuclear power plants in Indonesia
The Russian state nuclear agency, Rosatom, has signed an agreement with the Indonesian company PT Pembangkit Listrik Nuklir to construct two floating nuclear power plants. This marks the first commercial export agreement in the world for energy supplied by floating nuclear installations.
The two units, identified as FPU-100 models, will have a combined capacity of 200 megawatts. They are designed to provide electricity to the northern part of Halmahera Island in the North Maluku province. The plants will utilize RITM-200M reactors, a technology derived from Russia’s nuclear icebreaker fleet, and are engineered to operate in maritime environments and warm climates.
According to officials, the project is expected to begin supplying electricity within approximately five years. The venture will be financed through a business-to-business (B2B) model using private sector funding, rather than the Indonesian public budget. Rosatom Director-General Alexei Likhachev noted that the project aims to establish a long-term partnership and could transform the host country's economy. Additionally, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov indicated that Moscow is proposing the future construction of more powerful land-based nuclear plants to Indonesian authorities.
