Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez launches 2nd Latin American scientific Python course

The Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (Secihti), headed by Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, inaugurated the second Advanced Course in Scientific Programming with Python of the Latin American School (ASPP‑LatAm). The program is run in coordination with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and brings together graduate students and post‑doctoral researchers from Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Chile, Peru and Uruguay.

Instruction is provided by scientists from Germany, France, Poland, Spain and Switzerland. Ruiz Gutiérrez emphasized that while AI and computational tools hold great potential, researchers must understand their limits: “We cannot limit ourselves to accepting results produced by systems whose operation we do not understand.” The course aims to strengthen a connected, collaborative scientific community in Latin America and to develop the critical skills needed to evaluate and responsibly use advanced digital tools.

The initiative also highlighted the role of the Mexican diaspora, noting the contribution of Carlos Echeverría Serur, a coordinator based at the Humboldt University of Berlin, as an example of returning expertise to support regional development.
