Rose care: Managing diseases and heatwave recovery
Rose gardeners face various challenges during the summer growing season, primarily stemming from disease and extreme weather. Fungal issues are common, with black spot, powdery mildew, rust, downy mildew, and anthracnose being frequent threats. These pathogens often thrive in warm, humid conditions caused by poor air circulation or overhead watering. Early detection, such as monitoring lower leaves for dark lesions or white coatings, is essential for effective management.
In response to heatwaves and drought, roses may exhibit wilted blooms and scorched foliage. To revive stressed plants, experts recommend deep watering at the base of the plant, ideally in the morning, to ensure the root ball is thoroughly hydrated. Providing mulch and afternoon shade can also assist in recovery. Gardeners are cautioned against over-pruning or fertilizing during periods of high heat stress.
