Rose hips offer seasonal uses for decor and nutrition
Rose hips, the fruit of the Rosa canina, are available for harvesting in autumn and can be used for both decorative and nutritional purposes.
For seasonal decor, firm rose hips can be threaded onto florist wire and shaped into red hearts. These can be used as decorative picks for planters and moss compositions or suspended in door wreaths.
Nutritionally, rose hips are a rich source of vitamin C. When harvested in October, they are bright red and firm, making them ideal for drying. Once dried, they can be ground into a powder using a blender or coffee grinder for winter use. To preserve nutrients, it is recommended to dry them at temperatures not exceeding 40°C. While firm berries are best for drying and powder, softer berries following frost are better suited for making jams.
