Roseana Sarney eyes Senate seat in Maranhão for 2026 election

Former governor and current federal deputy Roseana Sarney (MDB) announced she is considering a run for the Senate seat from Maranhão in the 2026 elections. She cited strong poll numbers and improved health as reasons to re‑enter electoral politics, and noted the lack of an official coalition between the Progressive Union Federation and the MDB would boost her competitiveness.

Sarney’s potential candidacy would place her alongside incumbent senator Weverton Rocha (PDT) and federal deputy Pedro Lucas Fernandes, who is expected to run as an independent after the Progressive Union Federation cannot formally ally with the MDB. The move comes as parties negotiate their major‑party slates ahead of the MDB convention.
