Rosenheim residents support ban on sports betting advertisements

During a nationwide action day for gambling addiction awareness, the Diakonie Rosenheim addiction counseling center conducted a public vote in Rosenheim, Germany. The results showed clear support among participants for a ban on sports betting advertisements.

Madlen Löffler, a specialist at the Diakonie Rosenheim addiction outpatient clinic, highlighted the risks associated with the constant presence of such advertising, particularly for young people. She noted that advertising can trivialize the risks and facilitate entry into gambling.

Löffler also addressed the misconception that sports knowledge prevents financial loss. She explained that individuals with significant sports expertise often lose more money because they tend to engage in riskier betting patterns. This can lead to a cycle of addiction where individuals attempt to win back lost funds, often resulting in severe financial distress and an inability to cover basic living costs like rent.
