Rosh Hashanah culinary traditions see modern and classic adaptations

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, various traditions and modern culinary adaptations are being highlighted to celebrate the Jewish New Year.

In the United States, Bob’s Well Bread is reintroducing its annual round challah, available in plain or raisin varieties. The round shape symbolizes the continuous cycle of life and renewal, a departure from the standard braided loaf.

Newer generations of cooks are also reinventing holiday staples. While honoring ancestral customs, Millennials and Gen Z are using internet resources to experiment with creative presentations, such as challah wreaths and unique apple and honey-based recipes.

Other culinary traditions include specialized baking, such as Moroccan Sephardic fig, date, and nut cakes, and simple decorative touches like pomegranate aril flowers used to garnish desserts.
