Italian prison officers targeted in multiple violent assaults

A series of violent assaults against prison staff has highlighted growing security concerns within the Italian penitentiary system. In Caltagirone, a senior coordinator of the prison police was hospitalized after being repeatedly struck in the head and face by an inmate during an extraordinary search. The attack resulted in a traumatic brain injury and a fractured nasal septum.

In Lecce, two separate incidents involving prison officers were reported. One involved a superintendent who was bitten by an inmate with psychiatric issues, while another assistant was assaulted during a visitation period. These incidents have prompted the Sappe union to demand urgent interventions regarding staffing levels, the management of inmates with psychiatric disorders, and the provision of better protective equipment.

Labor unions are pointing to systemic issues, including severe prison overcrowding and insufficient personnel, as primary drivers of the instability. In Lecce, for example, the facility is operating significantly over its intended capacity, which complicates the ability of officers to maintain order and safety.
