Rossland wildfire prevention project to begin October 19

The City of Rossland is launching a wildfire prevention project through its FireSmart program, scheduled to begin on October 19, 2026. For approximately eight weeks, contractors will perform fuel treatment on municipal land parcels to reduce the risk of wildfires spreading to residential areas and the wider community.

Key activities include the removal of woody surface fuels from tree mortality, winter storm damage, and thickets of understory conifer ladder fuels. Crews will also remove danger trees in compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations. To maintain the local ecosystem, the project aims to retain healthy large trees, deciduous vegetation, and identified high-value wildlife trees.

Debris disposal will involve pile burning, which will only occur during days with acceptable venting conditions, and the provision of firewood. Residents and trail users should expect temporary closures in treatment areas, noise from chainsaws and chippers, and the presence of crew vehicles and equipment along roads and trails.
