Rossmann store targeted by empathy-based fraud scheme

A fraud scheme targeting empathetic shoppers has been reported at a Rossmann retail location in Germany. According to an account shared by influencer ‘The Handymann’, a woman at a checkout counter requested financial assistance for baby supplies, claiming she could not afford items such as formula and diapers.

A generous senior citizen offered to pay for the approximately 22 euro purchase. After the transaction, both women left the store toward their vehicles. While the senior departed in her car, the other woman reportedly returned to the store shortly after, suggesting the interaction was a calculated tactic to exploit the kindness of strangers.

Authorities advise victims of such scams to immediately inform store management to warn staff and to file a criminal complaint for fraud under § 263 StGB. It is also recommended to create a detailed written record of the incident, including descriptions of the perpetrator and any vehicles involved, to assist police investigations.
