Rostec develops PD-35 high-bypass turbofan engine

Engineers at the United Engine Corporation (UEC), a subsidiary of Rostec, have developed the PD-35, a next-generation high-bypass turbofan engine. The engine features a massive fan with a diameter of 3.1 meters and an outer radius of approximately 1.55 meters.

The fan assembly consists of 18 wide blades, each roughly 1.4 meters tall, with a total weight of about 300 kg. Due to the high rotational speeds, the tips of the blades move at hundreds of meters per second, generating kinetic energy comparable to a flying bullet.

To manage the immense centrifugal forces and prevent damage from potential blade failures, the design utilizes a high-precision locking assembly rather than standard bolts or rivets. This assembly is engineered to transfer centrifugal force from the blades to the disk while enduring aerodynamic loads, vibrations, and sudden load peaks.
