Rostec highlights precision of Tornado-S and Sarma MLRS
Rostec has highlighted the capabilities of Russia’s next-generation multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), specifically the Tornado-S and the newly developed Sarma. These systems utilize an integrated automatic fire control and guidance system (AGFCS) that allows for programmable flight paths for individual warheads, enabling high-precision strikes on fortified or underground targets while minimizing ammunition expenditure.
The Tornado-S is designed to target command centers, air defense systems, and artillery units. In a recent report, a Tornado-S unit reportedly destroyed an underground Ukrainian command post in the Dobropillya area using two 300mm precision-guided munitions from a distance of approximately 100km.
The Sarma is a lighter, more mobile version of the system, utilizing a 4-axle KAMAZ chassis. While the Tornado-S uses a MAZ-543M chassis and weighs over 40 tons, the Sarma weighs no more than 28 tons, enhancing its maneuverability and survival rate on the battlefield. The Sarma features six 300mm launch tubes, compared to the twelve found on the Tornado-S and Smerch systems. This reduction in tubes allows for faster deployment and relocation, with a full salvo taking approximately 18 seconds. The Sarma is expected to be delivered to the military starting in 2025.
