Rostec promotes modernized T-80BVM tank as stealthy combat vehicle

Russian defense conglomerate Rostec has highlighted the capabilities of the modernized T-80BVM main battle tank, describing it as a versatile asset capable of various tactical roles, including acting as a ‘steel battering ram’ to break through enemy defenses and a ‘sniper’ for precision strikes.

The T-80BVM features a GTD-1250 gas turbine engine, which the manufacturer claims provides high power while remaining relatively quiet, potentially allowing the vehicle to perform flanking maneuvers with a degree of stealth. The tank is also designed to engage targets at distances of up to ten kilometers and is intended to operate effectively even in environments with high concentrations of FPV drones.

While Rostec emphasizes the tank's mobility, camouflage, and upgraded armor and electronics, military analysts note that battlefield experiences in Ukraine show that these features do not provide complete immunity to mines, anti-tank weapons, or drone strikes. The modernization program, carried out by the Omsktransmash plant, aims to upgrade older T-80 series models into contemporary combat platforms.
